How to create your website on the TOR network using Kali Linux

Almost everyone knows about the TOR shadow browser, which protects users by hiding all basic data and allows access to sites in the .onion domain zone. These sites are mainly used for illegal activities, but in addition to this, you can also find various information forums, libraries, opposition portals, etc. in the list of Darknet web resources.

Many know how to connect to such a site, but how it functions and how to create it not all. Let’s analyze this process in detail.

Installation of components

The first step is to install an old version of Kali Linux, for example 1.0.6.

Next we install and unpack Shallot

Go to the created directory and start the assembly by commands

◽️cd Shallot-master

Now let’s install Tor and lighttpd directly

◽️apt-get install tor
◽️apt-get install lighttpd

At this stage, you must first get the domain. It is done by a team.

◽️./shallot ^codered.

Something like coderedkpdsto4wxhr.onion and a private key to it will be created. You can insert any name instead of codered.

Then we start Tor and lighttpd

◽️service tor start
◽️service lighttpd start

In the file /etc/tor/torrc you will need to add such strings

◽️HiddenServiceDir /var/lib/tor/hidden_service/.
◽️HiddenServicePort 80

In the latter, you can add an external ip instead of a local one. It is also desirable to add this line

◽️ExcludeNodes {ru}, {ua}, {be}.

Now, in the /var/lib/tor/hiddenservice path, you need to enter the previously obtained domain into the hostname file, and a private key into the private key.

The only thing left to do is to change the parameters in /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf to the following ones

◽️server.document-root = “/var/www/”.
◽️server.error-handler-404 = “/404.html”.
◽️server.tag = “Your value”.
◽️server.port = 8080 $HTTP[“remoteip”] !~ “” { url.access-deny = ( “” ) }.
◽️server.dir-listing = “disable”.

Almost done, only need to create web pages index.html and 404.html in the folder /var/www/, respectively. Now, when going to the previously generated address, the created site will open. It is worth adding that in lighttpd it is possible to insert many additional modules, thus modifying the site.
