How to protect information on a flash drive

Any information, as if we don’t have it, is of paramount importance to each person. We use it everywhere, and in the age of development of computer technologies, the amount of data received has increased dramatically.

We make electronic documents stored in digital form with your personal information, receive and send correspondence, create and use a variety of archives and databases, etc.

USB flash drives are small, portable and versatile storage device. The stick is very convenient to transfer data between computers. However, due to its compactness and portability, USB storage devices can easily be lost. Therefore, you need to take care of the reliable protection of the data on the drive.

For enhanced protection of your files you need to use encryption. If you do not want to separately buy a secure flash drive with hardware encryption, you can use a free program to obtain a similar level of security. Sometimes you want to transfer some information on a flash drive so that it no one has copied, also, to whom it was supposed to convey. Or you just want to protect flash drive with password, so nobody can view it.

Hardware protection

One of the easiest ways is to use a USB drive with built-in encryption. This model safely hide from prying eyes all the data, it also will slow down the system.

With all the advantages these flash drives are much more expensive than usual, due to the fact that directly on the media is a separate processor which produces data encryption. The high price led to the fact that the flash hardware protection is not represented in our market.

Software protection

This method does not claim to be the most reliable, however, let us remember the saying: the castle from honest people. So, we will use the built-in Windows program BitLocker.

Setting

  • 1. To protect the stick go to “my computer”, then click on the flash drive, right-click and click “turn on Bit Locker”;
  • 2. In the next window will prompt us to enter a password, by the way, don’t take short passwords is not a simple my advice is the fact that still Bit Locker will not pass the password at least 10 characters…
  • 3. Next you will be asked to create a key to recover and to specify the type of encryption: encryption of the entire USB drive (disk), or only the parts where the files are located.
  • 4. After 20-30 sec. POPs up a message saying encryption completed successfully. Actually not quite — you need to remove the flash drive from the USB.

After you re-insert the USB drive, the program will ask you to enter a password to access the data. Please note that if you go to “my computer” you will see the image of the stick with the lock — access is blocked. Until you enter the password — you do absolutely nothing will be able to learn about the flash drive!

Alternative means of securing the files

Let’s say that for one reason or another, a couple of the ways described above does not suit you. Well, then offer 3 options for how you can hide information from prying eyes…

  • 1) create a archive with password + encryption

A good way to hide all files and unnecessary to install any additional programs. Sure your PC has at least one archiver, such as WinRar or 7Z.

  • 2) Use an encrypted disk

There is a special program that can create encrypted image (like ISO, only for it to open — need a password). So, you can create this image and carry it with you on a flash drive. The only inconvenience is that on the computer where you will bring the flash drive should have a program to open such images. In an extreme case, it is possible to carry on this same drive next to the encrypted image.

  • 3) Put a password on a Word document

If you work with Microsoft Word documents in the office already has a built-in function for creating passwords.

At the end

As you can see, to protect their data is not so difficult. In any case, whatever You choose the method and algorithm of encryption, it will help to keep them from prying.
