The aim was to create a parallel, more secure network

In November 2018 US President Donald trump has signed the law on the National quantum initiative. In February 2020, the representatives of 17 national laboratories discussed the key points of the plan for the creation of the Internet, which is based on the principles of quantum physics.

The first results of the development of the project appeared on July 23. The event at the University of Chicago was presented the project of the quantum Internet. According to the plan, about a year scientists must communicate quantum communication laboratory at the University of Chicago and National laboratory behalf of the Fermi in Batavia.

At the presentation officials of the Department of energy (DOE) has published a report which disclosed the development of a national strategy for the quantum Internet, which uses the laws of quantum mechanics for a more secure transfer of information than in existing networks.

The Agency collaborates with universities and industry researchers in the development of initiatives with the aim of creating a prototype within a decade.

In February, scientists from Argonne national laboratory Department of energy and University of Chicago created the 83-kilometer-long “quantum loop” in suburban Chicago, thus creating one of the longest ground-based quantum networks in the country.

The aim was to create a parallel, more secure network based on quantum entanglement or the transfer of subatomic particles.Quantum entanglement is a quantum mechanical phenomenon in which the quantum States of two or more objects are interdependent.

The Department said that among the first users of quantum Internet could be the banking and health care, and also creates applications for national security and aviation communications.

Paul Dabbar, Deputy Minister of energy for science, says that the quantum network is secure by definition, because the laws of physics. David Avshalom, a physicist from the University of Chicago and Argonne national laboratory, in turn, said that the repeaters for Quantum Internet are still at an early stage of development but look very promising.
