Search for hidden cameras in a rented apartment or hotel room

Incorrect owners may install hidden cameras in apartments, rooms and houses and not inform their guests about the filming, thus breaking the law. Hotels do the same, although much less often than homeowners.

There are more and more cases where guests find hidden cameras in their rooms and suites. According to research results, hidden cameras are found by 1 in 10 Airbnb users. No less than such devices in hotels and hostels. Let’s imagine the scale of the problem, given that the guests do not detect all the cameras, but only those installed carelessly. How to protect yourself from spying? You can at least carefully inspect the room before you move in. In this article, we’ll tell you what, where and how to look.

Look around for strange gadgets

When we come on vacation or go on a business trip, settlement is usually relaxed. The final point of the journey has already been reached and we can rest. Take a break, but then immediately examine the room or room where you have settled.

Are there no strangely-looking devices nearby? For example, as in the picture below.

In the center is a hidden camera that disguises itself as a charger. This device is really capable of charging, but it also has undocumented functions. And there are a lot of such gadgets: it can be smoke detectors, remotes, speakers, alarms, bulbs and even pots with flowers or “forgotten” Lego cube.

The first inspection should pay attention to any suspicious things that are in sight. The camera will in any case be in line of sight. It can be disguised as a quite ordinary thing, which is in an unusual place – an alarm clock in the bathroom, for example.

Use a flashlight or smartphone flash to detect device lenses

If nothing is found (or even more so if something is found during the first inspection), it is the turn to check with a smartphone flash or a regular flashlight. This is not a bad tool to detect spy equipment.

Any camera has a lens with glass or polished plastic. Albedo (reflectivity characteristic) of this surface is much higher than albedo of other things. Accordingly, the lenses of a hidden camera, if light is directed at them, will reflect the rays much better than any other objects around.

Turn off the light in the room you are examining, dim it (blinds, curtains, etc.), and turn on the phone flash, circling the room. You should keep an eye out for small bright spots. If they do appear, take a good look at what they are. It may well be a hidden camera.

Darkening also helps without using flashlights. Lots of cameras are equipped with an operation indicator and can be seen in the dark.

Survey-small objects

Spy equipment can be miniature. Accordingly, it can be hidden in small objects and disguised as e.g. fastening bolts, pens and other items. Smaller interior details are best checked carefully. Do not forget about cute toys that are in the line of sight. They are the most commonly built in cameras.

Use Wi-Fi Sniffers for Smart Device Detection

It is not always possible to find the cameras during a visual inspection. Sometimes more advanced tools are needed than eyes and a flashlight.

These are systems that are able to detect WiFi sources. The fact is that the vast majority of cameras placed in hotels and rental housing, transmit the signal wirelessly, rather than writing data to the built-in drive.

Thankly, such gadgets can be detected. This task is best performed by specialized applications. For example, Fing is a mobile application (for iOS and Android) that detects the vast majority of gadgets connected to the local router. There are also alternatives such as Hidden Camera Detector, iNet, Tiny SVR Came and others.

The application does not show the type of device detected, but shows its MAC address. The next step is small: using services like you can determine the type of device – camera, TV, smart bulb or something else.

Wiretap Detector

It’s certainly not the easiest way to detect devices. Firstly, the use of RF detectors by individuals is prohibited in several countries. Secondly, such a device is not transported across any border. And thirdly, few people will buy and carry a wiretap detector, going on holiday.

Tapping detectors, however, are very good at detecting hidden electronic spies – not only WiFi, but also Bluetooth devices. You can buy it on eBay, Amazon and other websites.

Using the detector is quite simple. We need to go around the room with it. If you hear a recurring sound, it means the device has found something. The closer you get to the signal source, the more often the sound will repeat itself. If your detector suddenly starts beeping next to a flower pot, it means there’s something else inside.

Search for infrared source

We’re talking about night vision cameras. If you turn off the light in the room, these devices begin to emit in the infrared range. You can use your smartphone camera to find the infrared source. It does not have an infrared filter (at least most modern models), so you can use your phone to find the source of the directed infrared rays.

If you wish, you can assemble your own detector:

There are, of course, thermal imaging cameras that connect to mobile phones, but the cost of such devices is high and not available to everyone.

No matter how good the homeowner may seem, it is better to follow the principle of “trust but check”. If you find a camera, contact the police and/or email Airbnb/ support by sending photos or videos of the camera. In this case, the service should refund your money and provide similar accommodation. Peek-aiders are usually immediately removed from the available housing catalogues and do not cooperate with them in the future. It is better not to engage in self-administration, it can cause problems with the law.
